About the show

The second concert in this year's festival takes its title from Joan Miró's famous painting ‘The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings’.

String quartet Brother Tree Sound takes us on a colourful journey from France to Spain with pieces by Debussy, Elizabeth Maconchy, and Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova, whose piece is inspired by Miró's impulsive, abstract art.

The concert takes place in the light-filled church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe in the City of London. Its fascinating name comes from the Royal Wardrobe of Edward III, moved from the Tower of London to Baynard’s Castle (the church's original site) in the 13th century.

Set in the heart of London’s historic Square Mile, Kestrel Music’s nine-day festival, Summer Music in City Churches, returns with a world-class roster of artists taking a musical voyage ‘Around the World’. Hosted across five atmospheric, acoustically rich churches, this year’s theme explores music inspired by cities, landscapes and traditions. From traditional song and jazz arrangements, to lush choral harm

The original church and Royal Wardrobe were lost in the Great Fire of London, and the church was rebuilt to Sir Christopher Wren's elegant design in 1695.
