About the show
A sizzling Saturday night Southern Italian party at Jamboree with the brilliant Amaraterra, the first Pizzica ensemble in London, performing traditional music from the heel of Italy!
A ‘Pizzica’ is the malicious bite of the tarantula spider. In order to heal from the poison you must dance till you drop, following the intense, restless beat of the tambourine. It is one of the oldest musical expressions of the Mediterranean, brought to London by a group of passionate musicians. Expect a flourish of instruments, colour and movement.
Featuring - Amaraterra
Amaraterra is an ensemble of musicians and dancers from Italy performing traditional Southern Italian folk music in London. The main influence of the band is the timeless rhythms and dances of Salento. Salento comes with its very own brand of folk dance: the 'pizzica tarantata', from the bite (pizzico) of the tarantula spider: the magic trance dancing is said to heal any 'poisoning of the soul. But pizzica is also a dance of courtship, jesting, and simply joy of life.
Amaraterra are:
Simona de Leonardis (vocals and dancer)
Carla Pandarese (vocals and dancer)
Antonio Fersini (vocals and guitar)
Alfredo Giani (vocals, mandola, mouth harmonica)
Stelios Katsatsidis (accordion)
Massimiliano Passante (vocals and tamburine)
Federico Tommasi (vocals and tambourine)
Cassandre Balosso-Bardin (vocals, recorder)
Mark Glanville (vocals, clarinet, ciaramella)
