Join us at Heath St Baptist Church where Owen Spafford, Will Allen and Ben Filmer-Sankey will launch their new album ?Sun in the Sands?.
This trio formed met as part of the London Irish trad scene and quickly bonded over a mutual love of English trad. and Appalachian old time music. This record was made as an reflection of their musical backgrounds with an emphasis on feel, groove and a minimalist approach to English traditional music.
This album is one of English traditional music from most parts of England. It?s an honest and exposed record of three trad musicians at the top of their game. You will hear flavours of various external influences in their playing, in the same way that English music has always been nourished by multiculturalism.
The name ?Sun in the Sands? comes from a concrete roundabout on the A2 in Blackheath, itself named after a pub which has been on the site since the 18th century. The generations of musicians in the story of this music reflect the layers of history and peoples? lives buried in the geography of London.

Equally at home in a traditional session as he is in a free improvisation workshop, Spafford's understanding of the oral tradition and love for vernacular music from around the world enables an inventive and thoughtful fiddle style. Owen has just released a debut album with Louis Campbell (Sam Sweeney) which was described by Martin Hayes as "a beautiful, moody and tasteful recording that defies classification. The arrangements and playing are truly subtle and the sounds are pristine.”

Will Allen
Will Allen is an expert button accordionist, melodeon player and fiddler based in the southeast of England. He has an enormous repertoire of dance tunes from England, Ireland, Scotland and many other western countries. Will also composes his own music and teaches people of all abilities to play and understand traditional music and dance.
