Comfort, Hope and Harmony: Brahms’ German Requiem at Leeds Minster
This Good Friday, audiences are invited to experience music that speaks directly to the heart as St Peter’s Singers perform Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms at Leeds Minster on Friday 3 April 2026 at 7.00pm.
Unlike the traditional Latin Requiem, Brahms wrote this work in German as a “Human Requiem”, intended not to mourn the dead but to comfort the living. The music moves from quiet reflection through moments of profound sorrow to passages of uplifting grandeur, leaving audiences with a powerful sense of reassurance and hope. Its direct emotional language makes it deeply moving even for those new to classical music.
The programme opens with motets by Brahms and fellow Romantic composers Felix Mendelssohn and Anton Bruckner, exploring themes of faith, consolation and peace.
St Peter’s Singers are joined by the National Festival Orchestra and conducted by Alexander Woodrow, with soloists Helen Winter and Quentin Brown.
In the magnificent setting of Leeds Minster, this Good Friday performance promises an evening of comfort, hope and harmony through one of the most powerful works in the choral repertoire.
