About the show

Both these artists are making a return to Weirdshire after blowing us away on their previous visits.

The Brackish sound is characterised by its use of dynamics, long-form composition and improvisation. Face melting heaviness gives way to gentle, spacious soundscapes within a single composition. Kraut-like grooves, polyrhythms, violent melodic statements and psychedelic, freeform improvisation are present in equal measure. Always expressed with a strong emphasis on melody and narrative, aiming to take the listener on journeys of much needed escapism. They were an absolute force to be reckoned with last time and we're really excited to have them play again.

Described on John Robb's Louder than War site: "... relentless riffing can suddenly morph from Sabbath sludge to Television crispness.... chock full of magical moments and surprise left turns which will excite".

Dean McPhee's music draws on influences from dub, British folk, underground electronic music, and psychedelic rock. He has toured throughout the UK and Europe, opening for artists including Thurston Moore, Acid Mothers Temple, Michael Chapman, Wolf People, The Magic Band, Emeralds, and Ex-Easter Island Head. Dean is touring the UK to mark the vinyl release of his sixth album ‘Northern Earth’. Described as “masterful” by Boomkat in their recent review of the now sold-out cassette version, they declared that there is “nowt else quite like it in the modern field”. ‘Northern Earth’ sees Dean adding overdriven guitar, snare drum and deep sub-bass to his hypnotic, atmospheric instrumental guitar compositions.

KLOFmag on Northern Earth: "A real sense of life and energy flows through each mercurial, exploratory piece. It is complex, painstakingly crafted music that is also focused and assured; it comes highly recommended."

Featuring - The Brackish

Thrillingly unique instrumental new-wave-jazz-prog-psych-rock featuring alumni of Zun Zun Egui, The Liftmen and Marc Ford Band.

There's a murky interconnected web in the Brackish mix; Guitarist Luke Cawthra and drummer Matt Jones played together in art-rock band The Nuge then with Emily Breeze and Phantom Limb.

Matt played with bassist Dave Johnston in Zun Zun Egui and the two of them plus guitarist Neil Smith played in afrobeat band Helele and prog-jazzers Smith and Willox. Neil and Matt currently play in Tammy Payne's band. Matt and Luke also write and perform in Uncle Ecstasy.
