About the show
A true original of British jazz, Art Themen has been a vital and inventive presence on the UK jazz scene for more than six decades. Winner of the British Jazz Award for Best Tenor Saxophonist, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and recently shortlisted for Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Art remains as distinctive, witty and brilliantly unpredictable as ever. This living legend has famously balanced a career as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with performing alongside some of the biggest names in British jazz and beyond. Over the years he has played with Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey, and appeared on recordings with artists including Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. Described by The Observer as “one of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”, Art continues to delight audiences with his unmistakable sound, boundless creativity and infectious sense of humour.
