About the show

'One of the world great mandolinists’ (BBC Radio 3) Simon Mayor is also very funny! His many faceted career includes two nights at Wembley Arena, a song on the iconic American TV series, The Simpson, , his own series on BBC Radio 2, an album in the Classic FM Top Ten chart and causing mayhem at a Canadian humour festival….But his most thrilling moment was a journey through the square window on BBC TV’s Playschool!

Possessed of “one of Britain’s finest voices’ (BBC Radio 4), Hilary James also plays the amazing giant mandobass, adds guitar to anything from blues to Vivaldi and picks a mean banjo break.

Together they’ve recorded over twenty acclaimed albums and have just finished a short pre-concert film of Hilary’s art animations and poems from Simon’s latest book - Of Death and a Banana Skin’. Can they be serious!!?? Well, you’ll have to come along to the Cygnet Theatre on the 12th October to find out!

Simon Mayor & Hilary James

Simon Mayor & Hilary James appearing at this event

Simon Mayor is one of the worlds leading mandolin virtuosos and composers for the instrument as well as a fine guitarist, fiddle player and wit. Hilary James elegant singing is regarded as one of the purest singing voices to be found on the English musical stage. Quintessentially English, they easily cross the great musical divides from British ballads to blues and Berlioz.

They have that rare ability that allows them to perform a truly diverse array of music with respect and affection held together by humorous introductions. Their repertoire encompasses folk, traditional, Celtic, swing, blues and classical music richly illustrated by a diverse range of instruments from mandolin, guitar, banjos, ukuleles, double bass and Hilary’s famous giant mandobass - the latter generates a lot of interest at performances.

They slide easily from a beautifully evocative Irish ballads into a mandolin and guitar version of Handels Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and finish with everyone singing one of their own notoriously comic songs (reminiscent of Hillaire Belloch and Flanders and Swan).
