Exeter Barnfield Theatre is a purpose built theatre located in the heart of Exeter’s city centre.
The building itself dates from 1890, when it was the home of the Exeter Literary Society, and has been variously occupied by the GPO, Civil Defence, the Tax Office and the Exeter Little Theatre Company. The building was converted in 1972 from The Barnfield Hall which was built towards the end of the 19th century by Exeter Literary Society.
Now completely independent and run by a charity, today the theatre plays host to a wide variety of shows, conferences, Mother & Toddler groups, theatre schools and great music. We have a small but dedicated team of staff and volunteers who maintain the building, deliver brochures, serve drinks in the Barnfield Bar, serve snacks and ice creams, meet and greet, man the box office desk and telephone and work hard to make your visit to the Barnfield Theatre the most welcoming, friendly and entertaining experience it can be.
‘Welcome to Exeter’s best kept secret ! The Barnfield is a wonderful, intimate venue offering exemplary entertainment from theatre to the best in live music. The acoustics are fabulous and the perfectly tiered seating provides an unobstructed view of the stage. Pay a visit at your earliest opportunity’
