About the show

Benita Johnson is a Sussex-based vocalist, guitarist and songwriter who has been a dynamic presence on the southern-UK music scene for many years. Beginning in the late-90’s learning her craft at grassroots venues in Bristol, doing sessions and harmony vocals for local bands she later moved on to solo shows further afield, including the Netherlands, and various festivals large and small. She has had the privilege of supporting acts such as Boo Hewerdine, Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) and Patrick Duff (Strangelove). Her music has been described as “not folk, not rock or pop – it’s Benita Johnson doing her thing and it’s beautiful” (Malcolm Carter, Pennyblack Music Reviews) and sits generally beneath the Alt-Country, Folk-Rock, Americana banners. Listeners cite similarities to Dido, Amanda Marshall, Texas and even Bessie Smith. She writes to unite, connect and de-mystify, delivering performances that mix it up from stomping audience participation to down-tempo folk / blues that will just grab at your heartstrings.
