Professional harmonica player and teacher Mat Walklate presents a history of blues harmonica, from the earliest recordings to the 1960s, from George ‘Bullet’ Williams to George ‘Harmonica’ Smith.
In the first half Mat Walklate will demonstrate and discuss the performances and techniques of pre-war blues harmonica players such as Deford Bailey, Jaybird Coleman, Noah Lewis. Hammie Nixon, Jed Davenport etc.
The second half will look at post-war players and the development of amplified harmonica, examining the work of Little Walter, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Big Walter, Joe Hill Louis, both Sonny Boys, Snooky Pryor and the rest.
Mat will be ably assisted by two expert blues guitarists; Alex Haynes and James Lawley. There will be opportunities at the end of both halves for those who wish to, to get up and play with Alex and James. Amplifiers and mics will be provided.
Mat is a former British Blues Harmonica champion and has taught harmonica classes at The Met for many years. He is endorsed by Seydel Harmonicas and also teaches at Leeds Conservatoire.
