About the show
Johnny Dowd returns to the UK with Mike Stark and Mark Lotterman, playing songs from his first two albums, 'Wrong Side of Memphis' and 'Pictures From Life's Other Side'. The tour marks the vinyl reissue of 'Pictures From Life's Other Side': a double LP with the full original record plus newly recorded acoustic versions. Johnny's own advice stands: come see him before it's too late.
Johnny Dowd's cult classic 'Pictures From Life's Other Side' is being reissued on vinyl. Originally released in 1999, the album is a raw and unsettling mix of blues, country, garage rock and twisted Americana. More than 25 years on, it remains as strange, darkly funny and uncompromising as ever. It will be released on a double vinyl with the full original record plus newly recorded, acoustic versions on side 4.
Says Johnny: “I have a tour coming up in UK this April with Mike Stark and Mark Lotterman (Dutch rockstar and good buddy). There will be a vinyl release of my second album Pictures From Life's Other Side that sounds pretty amazing. Of course we will be playing a lot of songs from that record as well as tunes from Wrong Side of Memphis. I am really looking forward to this one. Come see me before it's too late.”
“If Willie Nelson turned into Mr. Hyde, he'd be Johnny Dowd. Backwoods Gothic tales of love, death, and a perverse God arrive with a twang and a junkyard clatter, reaching for laughs that grow uneasy.” (Jon Pareles, The New York Times).
Featuring - Johnny Dowd
'From the very edge of Americana'. Dark, doom-laden country. Johnny Cash meets Nick Cave reinvented by Quentin Tarantino.
Operating at the Captain Beefheart and Swamp ends of Alt.country, Texas-born maverick Johnny Dowd and his incendiary band are part of the Gothic Americana triumvirate that also includes The Handsome Family and Jim White.
His predilection for black humour, the absurd and spiky machine-gun electric guitar have also drawn comparisons with Nick Cave and Tom Waits.
