About the show

Anthony Joseph is an award-winning Trinidad-born poet, novelist, academic and musician.

His music is a blend of Afrofuturism, spoken word, broken/Afrobeat, dub, soul, funk and jazz. It is hard-hitting and beautiful, all-encompassing yet laser-focused, groovy and essential.

Anthony has released nine critically acclaimed albums to date, and in 2020 received a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composers Award. Described as “the leader of the black avant-garde in Britain”, his work occupies a space between surrealism, jazz and the rhythms of Caribbean speech and music.

Anthony Joseph transforms storytelling into sound, exploring how music can reclaim lost names and restore forgotten histories, by tracing the ever-evolving path of Black music with striking creativity.

A first visit to Belfast, and the opening concert of Brilliant Corners – we are delighted to welcome Anthony Joseph and his band!

“must be witnessed to be believed”– Pitchfork

“up there with Gill Scott Heron with his ability to connect to his audiences through the raw humanity in his lyrics” – Ransom Note
