About the show
Singer songwriter Sarah Jane Morris and guitar maestro Tony Rémy bring you a selection from their exploration of women in popular music, The Sisterhood.
For the acoustic version Rémy and colleagues provide a spell-binding sound which is both intimate and multi-layered, while Morris's commanding vocals establish her as an essential member of the musical sisterhood so described.
The playlist of original songs is comprised of celebrations of the lives and art of Nina Simone, Peggy Seeger, Etta James, Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Armatrading, Janis Ian, Rickie Lee Jones, Tracy Chapman, Sinéad O'Connor and Amy Winehouse.
Featuring
Sarah Jane Morris
Sarah Jane Morris straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range that rumbles from the heels of her size 8 shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. With The Communards, Morris topped the UK charts in 1986 with ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, and has since gained a devoted audience for her live shows. 'A voice that can excite shivers of passion and delight... Soaring, swooping, sensual and sophisticated, this voice is more than a style, it's a force of nature... Torch song, soul standard or smoky blues, the message remains constant: human passion with a dazzling voice' (Neil Spencer, The Observer).
