About the show

Join the infectiously rhythmic Mampama Quintet for a vibrant afternoon of live music in the stunning grounds of Barham Court. Bring a picnic, settle in on the green, and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

The Mampama Quintet brings together talented musicians from Kent and London to celebrate two iconic West African musical traditions: the lilting, fingerpicked melodies of Sierra Leonean Palm Wine music and the infectious rhythms of Ghanaian Highlife. These timeless genres have shaped artists worldwide, and the Quintet honours their rich heritage with performances of classic tracks by E.T. Mensah, S.E. Rogie, Osibisa, and more.

Our Canterbury Festival 2025 Contraband winners Gombo warm things up for the Mampama Quintet. Featuring students of both Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys and Girls, Gombo astounded judges at our 2025 Contraband showcase winning a cash prize to support their musical journey. We are incredibly excited to showcase this talented young band once again and can't wait to see them live at Barham Court.

Featuring

Mampama

Kent and London-based Mampama formed in 2015 through a love of two of the great West African popular music styles: ‘palm wine’ music from Sierra Leone, based around a distinctive two-finger guitar picking style, and ‘highlife’, the great Ghanaian fusion of traditional rhythms and jazz. For this gig the core fourpiece band will be richly expanded with percussion, a brass section and some veteran guest players.

Infectious grooves, great musicianship and even a little of the history behind the songs... expect to dance!
