Shivoham

Dewsbury-based Indian arts organisation Manasamitra brings its music and light show, Shivoham, for a one-off performance at York Minster as part of the Minster's National Interfaith Week programme. Ben Castle, son of Roy Castle OBE, plays saxophone and clarinet in the piece.

A stunning and unique musical experience inspired by the Indian god Shiva, combining South Asian Carnatic vocals with contemporary electronica – Shivoham is composed by electro, bass and underground composer Shri Sriram, who also performs live.

Shri is formerly of the Badmarsh and Shri electronic / trip hop duo, more recently having composed the soundtrack for The Life of Pi promo (India). Carnatic singer Supriya Nagarajan, Artistic Director of Manasamitra joins them on vocals.

The three musicians perform live through semi-structured improvisation to Shri’s originally composed soundtrack.

Inspired by Shiva, the Indian god called upon to restore balance in a world focused on self-destruction, the musicians take the audience on an emotive journey that reflects the ever present conflict between peace and disturbance.
