Strauss’s Four Last Songs – his final farewell to music and life, and for many people among the most sublimely beautiful and moving pieces of music ever written – are a highlight of what is sure to be a special evening, as the outstanding Bavarian soprano Christiane Karg joins Christopher Glynn to explore a theme of ‘expectation’. After performing extracts from Wolf’s colourful and passionate Spanish Songbook, some of Debussy’s most richly expressive songs, and evocative and intoxicating works by Schoeck and Schoenberg, her recital ends with Strauss’s autumnal masterpiece, where an ageing couple at the end of their lives look at the setting sun.
