South Pacific
Based on James A. Michener’s novel “Tales of the South Pacific”, the story is set in and around an island military base during the Second World War.
In the tale, Ensign Nellie Forbush, a United States Navy nurse, finds herself in love with Emile de Becque, a widower and French civilian who owns a nearby plantation. Their romance is hindered first when she learns of his former marriage to a native woman, then by a life-threatening mission he undertakes to help the American command.
A corresponding plot follows a newly arrived lieutenant, Joseph Cable, who begins a romance with Liat, an island girl, just as the fighting with the Japanese escalates.
In between these two love stories are various comedic swindles and schemes, usually carried out by Luther, a Navy sailor, or Bloody Mary, a local merchant.
Besides the music, the story is well known for its frank questions of race and acceptance - both Nellie and Cable are tortured by thoughts of what their families back at home would say about their relationships.
Add to the story a fantastic score of endless, well-loved songs including Some Enchanted Evening; I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair; There is Nothin’ Like a Dame; Bali Ha’i; This Nearly Was Mine and I’m In Love With A Wonderful Guy.
