Yerma

Yerma in Woking has been presented by Woking Dance Festival in partnership with Liaise

A Kathak interpretation of the classic play by Federico Garcia Lorca

The anguishing story of Yerma, who suffers heart breaking social torment of a childless marriage that forces her to commit a horrific and an irrevocable act.

Lorca’s savage yet poetical lyrical play set in rural patriarchal and religiously repressive Spain is re-imagined as an Indian classical dance for an inner city British community.

Amina Khayyam is one of UK’s leading south Asian dance artists, who makes new work using Kathak as the main core of a piece, but uses cross-form mediums in her narrative. With live music - cello, table, vocals, Yerma features British trained kathak dancers, who also have contemporary dance training, making the piece a beautiful example of neo-classical Kathak.
