The Trials Of Oscar Wilde

Returning to Rosehill following great performances of the Pinter double-bill The Dumb Waiter & The Lover, Chekhov's Shorts and Four Farces, the European Arts Company present a dramatisation of the libel and criminal proceedings in The Trials of Oscar Wilde.

Thursday 14 February, Valentine's Day, 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest at the St James' Theatre, London. Four days later, Wilde arrived at his club to find a card from the Marquis of Queensbury which famously said To Oscar Wilde - posing as a Somdomite. Egged on by his lover (and Queensbury's son) Lord Alfred Douglas, Wilde took legal action against the Marquis who was arrested for criminal libel and so began a dizzying series of events which saw Wilde go from toast of the town to indignant prosecutor to disgraced prisoner in less than 100 days.
