Dealing With Dreams - The Garman Ryan Collection 40th Anniversary

This exhibition tells some of the stories of the Garman Ryan Collection from its conception to the present day, with previously unseen archive material and artworks.

When Lady Kathleen Epstein gave the extraordinary gift of The Garman Ryan Collection to Walsall, it took over three years of negotiation and complex installation to enable it to open on 9th July 1974 in the old Carnegie gallery and library, Lichfield St, Walsall. The gift contained an amazing range of artworks, including work by Van Gogh, Monet, Freud, Epstein, Constable, Durer, Turner and others by unknown artists from many different cultures and periods around the world. Displayed for 40 years in Walsall, the collection has provided generations of people, locally, nationally and internationally, with many wonderful opportunities to engage with art of the highest quality. Kathleen would have been proud of the educational opportunities which her collection has provided for people over the years.
