Contrary to what Young Rival guitarist/singer Kyle Kuchmey says, I don't think it's "easy to be authentic without being deemed retro." Some bands spend their entire lifespan working at authenticity only to churn out another boring, derivative record. Young Rival certainly sounds like some kind of tie-dyed hybrid of The Kinks (the jangly guitars), The Beatles (vocal harmonies and slower songs) and the MC5, but one doesn't get the sense that they're music nerds going for a certain sound, just that they know their sh*t and are putting their own Hamilton, Canada hoofprint on it.
