Premier British jazz maestro whose career spanned fifty years. He was a major force during the early years of British revivalism, when he controversially introduced Bruce Turner on saxophone (and eventually dispensed with the banjo in the rhythm section), and his musical styles embraced mainstream, swing and big band influences. Non-jazzers will know Humph from the cult Radio 4 comedy quiz 'I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue'.
