Home Of Heroes

Looking at South Tyneside during the First World War, this exhibition features some of South Tyneside’s greatest sons including John Simpson Kirkpatrick who made his name on the beaches of Gallipoli using a donkey to help rescue the wounded from the field.

The exhibition also looks at those heroes who played a key role on the home front including seafarers who risked their lives to bring vital foodstuffs and raw materials into the country plus those who worked the mines, factories and shipyards in the borough.
