For Shakespeare And St George
Swindon Recital Series’ 20th Anniversary Season finishes on a very patriotic note, celebrating, on April 23rd, both Shakespeare’s birthday and St George's Day.
Paul Turner will be joined by Nigel Cliffe, baritone, to present a collection of English songs for the final Lunchtime Concert of the season.
This programme presents a picture of English song-writing at the beginning of the Twentieth Century – its major figures and the influences upon them – poetry, the Royal College of Music where most of them spent some time, war. Whilst some songs reflect the experience of war others are light and idyllic, reflecting another approach to love of country.
