The Legacy Of Women In World War One
In 1914, when conflict came, whole streets of men disappeared to war, to fight on the front. But there was another front that needed the brave, the busy, and the strong, and this front, the Home Front, was largely ‘manned’ by women. From princesses to parlour maids, women stepped away from their formal and conventional roles to take on the needs of the country. From making gunpowder to planting potatoes, from driving trams to driving industry, women could do it, and did; and in so doing, propelled the journey to winning women the vote.
Award-winning broadcaster, former Chief News and War Correspondent at the BBC, and author of four bestselling books, Kate Adie OBE will talk about her latest book, Fighting on the Home Front.
