Generals (Good And Bad) In The Middle Ages
William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, Henry V; we are familiar with the great generals of the Middle Ages, but what really made them great? Was being a chivalrous warrior as important as being a ruthless opportunist? Were commanders such as John and Edward II really so bad? And if so, why? This talk will challenge the myths of medieval warfare and will also cover some lesser known medieval commanders.
A Talk by Sean McGlynn (Plymouth University.
Sean McGlynn is a lecturer in history who has written widely on medieval warfare. His books include By Sword and Fire: Cruelty and Atrocity in Medieval Warfare and Blood Cries Afar: The Forgotten Invasion of England 1216 and Medieval Generals
