St Ives Antiques Fair

With the celebrations commemorating WW1 and WW2 this year, what better time to introduce a new Art Deco section to the St Ives Antique Fair?

The Art Deco period started in the 1920s, although the term ‘art deco’ was not actually coined until 1968. That period between the two World Wars was full of optimism, WW1 was finally over and the economy was booming. The Roaring Twenties are remembered as a time of frivolity, luxury and hopefulness. There was a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air which influenced artists, architects, craftsmen and designers.

The Art Deco style is, in fact, quite eclectic with influences of Art Nouveau, Modernism, Neo-Classicism and Futurism – but many of the works still did have commonality, such as clear streamlined designs in sleek aesthetic and symmetrical geometric shapes combined with bold, bright colours of yellow, purple, ruby and turquoise.

The Art Deco style continues to have a resonance with many people today and so the organisers of the St Ives Antiques Fair have will be introducing a new, dedicated Art Deco section within their coming Bank Holiday Fair in August. “We will include a section within the fair that has dealers specialising in Art Deco pieces, from jewellery to fashion, lighting and furniture”, said organisers Day Out Events.

The St Ives Antiques Fair is held in the Burgess Hall, which has also been used by the BBC for their Antiques Road Show programme in the past. It’s a comfortable air-conditioned hall with excellent catering facilities and free parking. The St Ives Antiques Fair’s two-day event has been running for over 30 years at the Burgess Hall, and is presently going from strength to strength.
