The magnitude of the nation's loss demanded a new approach to the public war memorials following the First World War. George Herbert Tyson Smith and William Goscombe John were amongst the generation of sculptors to adopt a more humanist attitude in their monuments to commemorate the casualties of war - both military and civilian.
