Heroes & Highwaymen
A host of dazzling costumed characters including soldiers, aristocrats, horses, riders and even a dandy highwayman, will welcome visitors to Wrest Park as it throws open the doors of its beautiful gardens for Heroes and Highwaymen this August bank holiday weekend
Wrest Park’s fashionable 1770s resident, Jemima, Marchioness Grey, will be welcoming her aristocratic friends and visitors alike, before she entertains her guests to tea in her fabulous garden. The genteel atmosphere may well be shattered when an audacious highwayman bursts upon them, with an eye on their valuables. Visitors will see the robbery in action, and if they are brave enough they can join the chase to stop him making off with the family jewels.
Each day visitors can witness the cut and thrust of 18th century fencing as the Swordmaster will demonstrate the noble art of swordplay, before heading to the display arena to marvel at the Redcoats of the 47th Regiment of Foot as well as visiting their tented encampment in the grounds to revel in the sights and smells of a real Georgian army base.
For those who prefer a more leisurely pace to their picnic, musicians will be performing traditional period pieces throughout the weekend and children can take part in the Georgian Puppet Show, hear the Highwaymen’s tales, get their face painted or have a go at a military drill.
