Members of Ensemble 360 perform this programme of moving music by three wonderful Czech composers. The concert has a particular poignancy due to the cruel fate that befell two of them: the startlingly original Erwin Schulhoff – who died of tuberculosis in Wülzburg camp – wrote his Concertino in 1925, drawing on the energetic rhythms of Czech folk dances; Pavel Haas (Janá?ek's most gifted pupil) wrote his Oboe Suite in 1939, just two years before his deportation to Terezin Concentration Camp and his subsequent death in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Janá?ek’s String Quartet No.1 is filled with a blazing passion, inspired by the ardent love he felt for his muse Kamila Stösslová.
