Matthew Brook, one of the country’s leading bass baritones, and acclaimed pianist, Anna Markland-Crookes, join members of Ensemble 360 for this evening concert, part of Love and War, Music in the Round’s Festival of World Class Chamber Music. Masterful settings of poems by Heine, Matthew Arnold, A.E.Housman and Masefield highlight the powerful emotional impact of the written word when combined with music as they contrast the joy of love with the pain of separation.

Schumann's Dichterliebe (The Poet’s Love), composed in 1840, his 'year of song' is shaped by the journey between the extremes of love and despair. George Butterworth's settings of Housman's A Shropshire Lad date from 1911-12 – these are poignant songs set to music by a composer who died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, just as he was emerging as an original new voice in English music. Ivor Gurney composed By a bierside and In Flanders whilst at the Front in 1917. He was wounded in action and his mental health was shattered by the war. Part of Love and War Music in the Round’s Festival of World Class Chamber Music.
