The TalkingGigs series resumes at the Lantern Theatre with the astonishing Sam Lee, whose debut album Ground Of Its Own was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2012. The last eighteen months have been extraordinary for him. Tours in Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, across Europe and the UK have exposed Sam to countless influences as he has crafted his new material – some captured on his most recent Sam Lee & Friends EP More For To Rise.

His unique sound has caught the imagination of artists from the world of music and beyond. Collaborations with Secret Cinema & Laura Marling; star turns at London Fashion Week followed by a Vogue feature; talks at 5 x 15; a regular Sam Lee show on Resonance FM and appearances in major TV productions including Peaky Blinders (BBC) have pushed Sam Lee into new and uncharted territories where he has flourished.

Still dedicated to the gypsy and traveller cultures of which he has become such a champion, Sam has established The Song Collectors Collective. The collective is driven by a passion for oral traditions that are often over-looked.

This gig will give you the opportunity to learn more about Sam – his influences and ways of working, as well as hearing songs old and new. And, of course, you’ll have the opportunity to ask him questions about the aspects of his work and career that interest you most.

TalkingGigs is a series of gigs which allow you to listen to music from the UK and around the world – but will also allow you to discovers more about the countries, cultures, musicians, instruments and history behind the music.

Listening to music will be the core of all the events – but they will also give you the chance to hear more from the performers about their stories and influences, and the chance to ask questions about whatever aspect of the music interests you. They will feature some stunning performers from a variety of places – all with something special or interesting to say and play.
