re:play Festival: Can't Stand Up For Falling Down
In a small south Yorkshire town in the 1960s, against the backdrop of the women’s liberation movement, through the interwoven narratives of Lynette Jodie and Ruby, this powerful play unfolds.
Lynette is a young wife, caught between a Christian duty to her husband and a longing for her lost innocence. Jodie, a young girl affected by a childhood trauma, is trying to make a new life for herself but is troubled by memories of the past. Ruby attempts to reconcile her two lives, as a single mother and a frustrated mistress.
Richard Cameron’s award-winning play is a powerful portrait of the strength, perseverance and humour of three individuals, struggling to come to terms with their situations. Music from the 1960s and film is used to tell this moving, witty and compelling story.
Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down contains depictions of domestic violence.
