Some say that Monteverdi's lavish ‘Vespers for the Blessed Virgin (1610)’ is
the greatest opera he never wrote. A sacred work, it nevertheless contains some of the composer's most theatrical and dramatic effects. There are powerfully emotional vocal solos, monumental fanfares, stereophonic 'call-and-answer' effects from divided choirs and instrumental writing of the utmost sensuousness.
