The Love Of The Nightingale By Timberlake Wertenbaker: Progress Youth Theatre
Love, war, Violence. loyalty and betrayal. Being silent, being silenced. Premonition. Death. Revenge.
These themes are poignantly addressed in Wertenbaker's adaptation of the myth of Tereus, Procne and Philomele, compellingly re-told weaving in traditional aspects of Greek theatre with a modern flavour.
When Tereus, King of Thrace, marries into the Royal Family of Athens, the gods wake up and, as Procne warns, it is never a good thing when the gods wake up and look at you. The beautiful, innocently passionate Philomele is caught up in a tragic chain of events, witnessed (or not?) by a Chorus, who are there 'to simply record'.
Warning. Contains scenes of physical and sexual violence - adults only.
Progress Youth Theatre
Progress Youth Theatre is a large and thriving youth theatre consisting of over 120 young people whose ages range from 10 to 18 years.
The youth theatre provides weekly workshops at Progress Theatre the for 5 groups that span these age groups.
As well as these workshops PYT puts on 3 main productions a year, one each term, and seeks to take one show out from their home at Progress Theatre to an external venue.
Recent years have seen a huge variety of work showcased with productions including Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth by Tom Stoppard, an all female Lord of the Flies, a modern adaptation of Julius Caesar as well as plays by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Steven Berkoff, and Oscar Wilde to name but a few.
