Paul RObeson: The Giant, In A Nutshell
Paul Robeson was one of the most famous Americans in the world in the first half of the twentieth century as an actor and singer - most notably for his rendition of Ol’ Man River and his portrayal of Shakespeare’s Othello. Somewhat less known about him is the fact that he was a pioneer of the modern African American civil rights movement, preceding Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jnr. by about two decades. He was also a strong socialist and champion of workers’ rights worldwide.
Award-winning Nigerian-born actor, writer and singer Tayo Aluko has travelled the world for many years telling Robeson’s story through his one-man play Call Mr. Robeson, and comes to the Continental on May Day to present Paul Robeson: The Giant, In A Nutshell, in which he sings a selection of well known and more obscure songs and illustrates the story with pictures and stories of the great man.
