Widely thought of as a development in the modern world, this talk will look at historical and current societies that recognise more than just male and female genders, social categories and constructs, drawing on examples from past and current societies around the world.

Professor Naphy is the historical consultant for 'Out in the World', a Radio 3 series on the history of sexuality.
