Everyone knows the music for the Old Spice advert - but have you ever wondered where it comes from?
To find out, all you have to do is come to Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 7th December at 7.30pm! Perth Choral Society, with the choirs of Craigclowan School, distinguished soloists Donald Maxwell Bass,(a Perth favourite), Natalie Montakhab, Soprano and Ben Kerslake, Tenor, accompanied by the City of Perth Sinfonia and conducted by Director of Music Peter Rutterford.
The text of Carmina Burana is a selection of secular poems of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, held in a manuscript at the Bavarian monastery of Benediktbeuren. Written mostly in Latin, (the international language of the times) there are some in old French or Middle High German. The big surprise is that apart from some poems which seem morally uplifting, the majority are bawdy student songs celebrating such temporal delights as drinking, gambling, dancing and love-making - antics not usually recognised as monk-like behaviour!
The work is in three sections - Springtime, In the Tavern and The Court of Love, all of which are preceded by and ending with a powerful hymn to the goddess Fortuna. A good story? Come and find out for yourself.
