Comedy is a very serious business. Beethoven knew that when his exuberant Second Symphony cheerfully cast out the classical rulebook, and John Adams certainly knew it when he transformed Beethoven’s late string quartets into Absolute Jest, a one-off concerto that takes Beethoven seriously enough to laugh along with him.
Programme to include:
Rameau Suite No.1 from Les Indes Galantes (arr.Dukas)
John Adams ‘Absolute Jest’ for string quartet
Rebel Chaos (from Les Eléments)
Beethoven Symphony No.2
Pre-concert talk: 6:45pm (free to ticket holders).
