From a difficult home life to a term as Home Secretary, Alan Johnson's story is a remarkable one. Growing up in poverty he was then orphaned at the age of 12, and brought up by his sister. He left school at 15 and joined a swinging '60s pop group before moving on to his career as a postman and ultimately into politics.
