The Railway Children

One event can change everything. Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are forced to move from a comfortable life in London to a small, cold cottage in rural Yorkshire after their father is taken away from them in mysterious circumstances. Building a new life with their mother in the country, the children meet some extraordinary people and discover exciting places to play – the railway station soon becomes their favourite haunt.

Missing their father, they wave to the London train each day to send him their love. This is a story which explores the nature of community spirit and of family bonds as they are pushed to the limit in troublesome times. We welcome you to the Maddermarket this Christmas to enjoy an imaginative, theatrical experience, a piece of theatre which takes the form of a memory play with Roberta, Peter and Phyllis recalling their childhood. Mike Kenny’s beautiful adaptation is creatively inventive whilst remaining faithful to E Nesbit’s touching 1906 children’s story.
