Last of the Haussmans
Stephen Beresford’s debut play premiered at the National Theatre in 2012. Dark, savage and very funny, this portrait of a chaotic and dysfunctional family is regarded as an examination of the ‘state of the nation’, looking at the legacy of the revolutionary generation of the 60s and the fate of its children.
Over the course of a summer, with her once grand Art Deco house on the south coast crumbling around her, ageing hippy Judy Haussman clings to an idealistic, indulgent and anarchic existence. After a minor cancer operation, her troubled son and daughter arrive to discuss the future and vent long-held resentments and failures. Outrageous, at times brutal and full of pathos, ‘The Last of the Haussmans’ will entertain and lift spirits high with sounds of the 60s.
