The Coronation Of Poppea
Lammermuir Festival’s first opera is Monteverdi’s gripping and shocking tale of lust, power, ambition and betrayal in imperial Rome.
Composed in Venice in 1642, it tells the story of a beautiful courtesan’s ruthless ascent to the throne as Nero’s wife and features some of the most ravishingly sensuous music of the 17th Century.
Monteverdi’s greatest opera is strikingly and disturbingly relevant to our own time in its penetrating exploration of the corruption of power.
A sparkling young cast sings in this new production, staged in collaboration with Yorkshire’s Ryedale Festival in a new translation by John Warrack.
