Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136 by David I, was the first monastery of the Cistercian order established in Scotland. It is a magnificent ruin on a grand scale with lavishly decorated masonry. The embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is also rests on the abbey's grounds, while the rest of his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey.
