IWM North (part of Imperial War Museums) is hosting The BBC Philharmonic for public performances in the Main Exhibition Space, telling the story of Salford lad Arthur Burke, a soldier in the First World War.

Actors and singers will bring to life his letters from the front line, interspersed with reflections and true stories by veterans from contemporary conflicts, whilst musicians from the BBC Philharmonic and Salford Symphony Orchestra perform an original score composed by Richard Taylor. This performance has a special connection for IWM North as Arthur Burke’s letters are currently on display in the acclaimed First World War Centenary exhibition ‘From Street to Trench: A World War that Shaped a Region’ and musicians will be performing alongside the field gun that fired the British Army’s first shot of that devastating conflict. The event is part of IWM North’s Reactions14 series of contemporary artistic responses to the First World War.
