Perspectives14 : Resistance
Ahead of International Conscientious Objector Day, discover more about those who resisted the call to action in the First World War and the consequences they faced. Cyril Pearce will share new thoughts on communities of resistance across Britain. Ingrid Sharp will look beyond the wartime propaganda to uncover the nature of German resistance to the war. Discover the stories of Socialists, feminists, pacifist groups and activists whose words and activities rarely reached the public.
Cyril Pearce is the author of Comrades in Conscience: the story of an English community’s opposition to the Great War, an exploration of the anti-war movement in his home town of Huddersfield. He has created a comprehensive database of British conscientious objectors, offering a national picture of the 16,000 men who resisted war in 1914-18. The Pearce Register of British Conscientious Objectors, has been incorporated into Lives of the First World War, a digital memorial to those who contributed to the First World War.
