Opus One Concert
A programme fo works comprising:
Weber: Overture: Der Freischütz
Schumann: Cello Concerto
Brahms: Symphony No 4
Former Principal Conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski is a much-loved Hallé institution and he returns to conduct music particularly close to his heart. With its hunting horns and orchestral evocations of the forces of good and evil, the overture Weber composed for his opera Der Freischütz is a masterfully constructed microcosm of the opera itself.
The Hallé’s consummate Principal Cellist Nicholas Trygstad then joins the great maestro for Schumann’s intimate Cello Concerto, a piece that showcases the lyrical and poetic qualities of the instrument, which sings out against a soft cushion of orchestral sound.
After the interval is Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, his greatest achievement in orchestral music. Its finale, a magnificent set of variations, is perhaps the most remarkable part of this most remarkable work.
The Hallé Orchestra
Founded by the pianist and conductor Sir Charles Hallé in 1858, The Hallé is the UK’s oldest working orchestra (and the fourth oldest in the world)…
