Wine, Wit & Mrs Wellfed: The Spanish Wives

The last of three evenings with the Bridge Theatre Company, exploring the witty work of Mary Pix.

A "most damnable farce”, so successful was this three act play with music that it was revived in 1702, 1704 and 1715. Full of excellent characterisations, with a tight plot, The Spanish Wives has been described as "a model of what a feminist farce is and pleasant it can be!” It concerns the comparison between the treatment of two wives - one, the young wife of a kindly, easy-going old governor, the other held prisoner by her jealous Marquess husband. What is to become of them…?
