Never miss another 'The Endellion String Quartet' show
The Endellion String Quartet
Haydn - String Quartet in B-flat Op.50 No.1
Britten - String Quartet No.2 in C Op.36
Beethoven - String Quartet in F Op.18 No.1 (‘Romeo and Juliet’)
The Haydn is another delightful jewel of the Op.50 set. Britten's Second Quartet is a powerful and original work from one of Britain's greatest 20th-century composers, whose centenary we are celebrating this year. The finale's Chacony pays moving tribute to Purcell, English genius of the 17th century; the middle movement is a virtuosic accomplishment, full of invention and rhythmic drive; and the first is an exploration of harmonies, textures and rhythms which bears Britten's distinctive fingerprints at every stage. Beethoven's masterpiece — whose moving slow movement was inspired by Romeo and Juliet — brings the programme to a close.
The Endellion String Quartet
Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Award for the Best Chamber Ensemble with a distinctive performing style. 'The Endellion is arguably the finest quartet in Britain, playing with poise, true intonation, excellent balance and a beautiful tone' (New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, 2000).
