Caroline Kraabel, John Edwards, Beibei Wang, Mark Sanders, Cleveland Watkiss

Five exceptional musicians from diverse backgrounds, drawn together by the intellectual and emotional thrill that only live improvisation can provide. Although they have played together often in various combinations, these five have never before performed at once on the same stage. The first set tonight will consist of a percussion duo and a trio of voice, sax and bass; the second set will be a quintet. Seize this opportunity!

John Edwards (double bass) is never less than astounding. He is sought out by listeners and the most distinguished musicians alike for his innovative and constantly inventive improvising. His generosity, sensitivity and mercurial quickness in musical communication are unparalleled.

Caroline Kraabel (sax/voice), a USA-born London resident, has been living and working with the saxophone for nearly four decades, improvising solo and in company, and composing for groups of up to twenty saxophones. She has been called iconoclastic; she aims always to play as herself.

Mark Sanders is a percussionist who has been in great demand by such musicians as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Otomo Yoshihide and John Butcher – for his consummate musicianship as well as for his creative approach, which transforms his modified drum-kit into a habitat of extended percussion sounds, melodies and rhythms.

Beibei Wang (percussion) was trained, and performs extensively, in the Western and the Chinese classical traditions, but she also and increasingly applies her exceptional discipline, reflexes and awareness to exploring the depth and spontaneity of improvised music.

Cleveland Watkiss is an award-winning singer with a vast vocal (and musical) range, who is well-known for his improvised solo performances using layers of sound created by his voice. He plays with a rare committment and seriousness.
